2016 Tampa Natsumatsuri Announcement

JETAA Table at Tampa Natsu Matsuri
Hi everyone,

We are pleased to announce that the 2016 Tampa Natsumatsuri has been set for June 11 from 6pm9pm!

That’s right, we’re moving to the evening!  This should make it less hot and hopefully easier for people to attend.  It’s also more traditional.  We just haven’t been in a position to do it until now.

I’m also very please to announce that we have a new festival Director!  Tom Gregorich is a JET alumni who has been active in sharing Japanese culture since his return to the US.  He’s been a personal friend of mine for many years and I know he’s going to do a great job.  Of course, I’ll still be involved, but Tom will be handling most of the coordination.

To help with the transition, we’ve also established a new email address that is dedicated to festival business.  Please add TampaNatsuMatsuri@gmail.com to your address book and direct festival questions there from now on.  This is the last festival email you’ll receive from the Tampakumi address.  But you will still receive emails from me about other Tampa Japanese community events.

As always, we need your help to make the festival a success.  Tampa Natsumatsuri is a non-profit community-based festival.  This means, it’s you, the Tampa Japanese cultural community, that make it happen.  So we need exhibitors, vendors, game operators, cosplayers, martial artists…anyone who participates in Japanese culture to come show off what you love.  As I always say, if there’s something you’ve always wanted to see at the festival, that’s a good sign you’re the one to bring it!

Thanks and see you there,

John

Tampa Natsumatsuri Founder

JETAAFL Tampa Region Representative.

March 2016 is the five year anniversary of the great east Japan earthquake. On March 11, 2011, while the rest of the world watched, much of the northern coast was washed away by the massive tsunami, triggered by a 9.0 earthquake. The tragedy was devastating to Tohoku, Japan, and the entire world. People lost loved ones, their homes, and even their way of life. In the months after the disaster, countless volunteers rallied from around the world and came to Japan’s aid to help begin the long process of rebuilding. Whether by donating money, organizing events, or coming to volunteer, these individuals showed they truly care about Japan and about the people of Tohoku. Tohoku Tomo tells their story.

Tohoku Tomo is 60 minutes in length, with English audio and Japanese subtitles.

These screenings are free and open to the public.

2015 Florida JETAA Bonenkai

Dear JETAA members,

It’s that time of the year for our annual JETAA Bonenkai!

This year’s JETAA Bonenkai will be once again held at Sekita-san’s restaurant, Koume in Plantation (just outside of Miami). Sekita-san was once the former JET coordinator for the Japanese Consulate and helped many of us get into the JET program. He makes delicious food and is an awesome host!

The agenda is to network and meet new and old JET alumni and build a stronger JETAA community in Florida to foster cultural exchange with the US and Japan.

This will be a pre-set meal of $20 per person, which involves several courses: soup, salad, appetizers, sushi, other dishes and desert. That is a lot of food for that amount of money especially since Japanese food is so expensive. Each year, he surprises us with a unique menu.

The cost of drinks and tip are not included into the deal, so that would be paid separately by you.

Location: Koume Japanese Restaurant

11905 W. Sunrise Blvd.
Plantation, FL. 33323
Tel: 954-577-9277
(located in the Petsmart Plaza)

Date: December 19, 2014 (Saturday)
Time: 6:15pm

Please RSVP by purchasing a ticket at http://jetaabonenkai2015.brownpapertickets.com/

The deadline to purchase a ticket is Dec. 13th. Purchasing a ticket secures your spot for the event. If you are bringing a guest they must have a ticket also. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies you must inform us by Dec 16th or else the restaurant will not be able to accommodate you.

If you do not purchase a ticket by the deadline we cannot accommodate you at this event!

Sekita-san’s restaurant is small, so space is limited. He also asks that you arrive on time, because food will be served promptly as scheduled. Think of this as Japan, be on time.

If you RSVP and later cannot make it, please have the courtesy and let us know by Dec. 16th, because once we give the final numbers to Sekita-san we end up paying for the person who doesn’t show up. In other words no refunds of your pre-payment. It will be considered as a donation to the FL-JETAA fund.

Hope to see you there!

Please join us after the Pre-Departure Orientation to say goodbye to some of the new JETs who will be leaving for Japan the next day.

The location of the event was selected due to the proximity to the hotel where most of the new JETs are staying.

Friends of JET are welcome at this event.

When: Friday, July 31 at 8:30pm – 10:30pm
Where: Tom’s NFL, 5001 NW 36 St, Miami Springs, Florida 33166
