This summer we said goodbye to Bahia, who’s served as our chapter president for many years. Goodbye, Bahia! We know this is a good move for you — we’ll miss you!
Bahia’s Goodbye Letter:
Hello, Florida JET alumni and friends of JET!
I have had a wonderful experience as president of Florida JETAA for the past five and a half years, but now it’s time to move on. I’m relocating back to the Washington, DC region, near my hometown. Thank you all for your support, especially those of you who ran for office and volunteered at our events. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many prospective JETs and welcoming back JET returnees. Meeting members of the local Japanese community and fans of Japanese culture at our events has helped keep my love of Japan alive.
I’m excited that the community will continue to be in good hands after I’m gone. As per our by-laws, the officers are able to appoint someone to fill the remainder of a term if it’s vacated mid-term. Therefore, our current Vice President Jennifer Hwang (ジェニファー ホワン) will be taking over the position of President for the remainder of the term. Tom Gregorich , who has formerly held the positions of President and Treasurer, will be coming on to complete the term of Vice President. Between these dedicated individuals and the rest of our elected officers, Florida JETAA will continue to serve the community well.
We’ve accomplished a lot since I was first elected president! The dedicated work of our officers has resulted in expanding the reach of Florida JETAA. Each year we offer more events than every before in Tampa, Orlando, and Miami, including Japanese language events, movie screenings, and yukata bar crawls. I’m very proud that we are now able to better serve JET alumni across the state through increasing our Facebook presence. Our membership on Facebook has increased from 19 to 223 members over the past five and half years! We also now use MailChimp to manage our membership and connect with you all by email. We’ve overhauled our website, making floridajetaa.org a go to resource for JET alumni and friends. I know the team will continue to improve and grow our chapter.
Thank you and sayonara,
