REVIEW: Japanese Market (North Bay Village)

Japan Connections

Submitted by: Allan M.; Saitama-ken, 2005-2007   Date Submitted: December 17, 2010

Name: Japanese Market
Address: 1412 79th Street Cswy North Bay Village, FL 33141
URL: http://www.japanese-market.com/
Review Type: Business (Asian Market)

Rating:

Review: It’s a rather large supermarket with a wide assortment of kitchen-stuffs, dry goods and numerous foodstuffs. The fridges are stocked with both frozen and fresh goodies and the supermarket gets Asian vegetables in twice a month (call ahead to be sure). There’s also a periodical/book section, an alcohol section and the well known sushi bar/restaurant area run by the owner and daughter.

This supermarket has been here for a number of years and the owner is well established in the area. As often happens in this situation, the location can either gain in reputation or go downhill, and I have to say the later seems evident. The owner has been steadily raising his prices, even on sauces and Asian items found in other Asian supermarkets or your nearby Publix (even in the month I visited twice). Present and former customers have said the sushi quality and size has been decreasing and the owner has been less than polite to other customers when a native Japanese is present (talks more, bigger portions). So far I’ve eaten there twice, saw the rudeness once and the fish quality was far better, yet much smaller, than most Thai/sushi places everywhere in South Florida.
